Mathew John Tombers

Mathew Tombers is a creative media strategist, consultant and business advisor with extensive experience working at the crossroads of content, branding, advertising and technology and facilitating across multiple platforms, for both Fortune 500 and start-up firms. He is recognized as an expert media trend forecaster and executive producer, with credits for over 150 hours of television programming, including the Peabody Award-winning “Off to War.” Mat is a prolific storyteller, speaker, moderator and panelist for all types of audiences both in the U.S. and abroad, and is passionate about working at the intersection of media, technology and society. He recently delivered the keynote speech at the Indian Institute of Technology, Roorkee, on media as a tool for empowerment.
Mat is the founder and Managing Director of Intermat, Inc., a boutique media consulting company that specializes in both digital and linear media engagements and offers business development expertise to both emerging and established media firms. In his work for client Odyssey Networks, Mat launched a mobile app, Call on Faith, which is currently the sixth most popular non-biblical spiritual app, as well as numerous websites and a Roku channel. For Discovery International, he assessed programming, advertising sales and marketing areas to provide comprehensive solutions to reverse the popular Animal Planet’s advertising sales underperformance.
Prior to Intermat, Mat successfully helped launch multiple businesses. He led all sales and marketing initiatives for Sabela Media, an ad serving solution, and played a significant role in selling the firm to 24/7 Media in early 2000 for $70 million. During his time there, he increased the number of clients from zero to over 100 at the time of sale. At Discovery Communications, he navigated channel launches in Australia and India, and in addition to his global work, spearheaded the development of Discovery on Board, which placed channels on planes and ships, and managed a complex corporate programming relationship with Chrysler.
Earlier in his career, Mat worked with FCB/Entertainment clients on innovative programming strategies and delivered a significant pan-European study of ad-supported television. He also opened the West Coast office for A&E four months after the firm’s launch, successfully growing that location from scratch into a multi-million dollar revenue advertising sales operation, rated #1 in client service and customer satisfaction by Myers Report for five years running.
Mat is past President of CINE, the Washington, D.C.-based video awards organization, and a past member of the Board of Governors of the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences, where he was founding Governor for the Interactive Media Peer Group. He is currently a Senior Fellow at USC’s Center for the Digital Future. He splits his time between New York City and his home in Columbia County, NY.
